Regular volunteer hours at Brampton House now set as Tuesdays 10am – noon
Staff were otherwise engaged today, as the Home Manger, Michelle, reported one of the residents passed away that morning…
Mary has now sketched out the grounds for the various plots:
- wild flowers
- polytunnel
- ‘market garden’ (neat rows of veggies)
- raised beds (including existing sensory garden)
- seating area
Mary, Alison and I measured out the various spaces. Mary wanted to avoid planting such that the view from the patio seating area would be blocked. Also considering how much needed to be wheelchair access and best types of pathway materials to get – preferably secondhand. Mary had already gathered plants being sold cheaply from other’s peoples gardens
Then we started digging the market garden area – just a few inches of the lawn and then turning the turf over, so that it apparently ‘eats at itself’ and eventually disintegrates – avoids having a pile of surplus / ‘waste’ earth
Alison (volunteer) recently moved to Folkestone (from Wales via London), buying first house with husband, loves gardening but never had the opportunity before moving here (and new house has a garden), heard about the volunteering opportunity from Custom newsletter. Works freelance in theatre design (??) with specific interest in productions relating to climate breakdown and sustainability. Will mostly work on the Martello School side because that’s where she lives, but will help at carehome on and off as work allows.

– beds wide enough to straddle with small paths in between
